Thinking of a Concept

In order to produce a concept for our opening sequence we brainstormed our initial thoughts by writing down immediate ideas which we thought of.

We then researched online to create a mood-board for more ideas and inspiration which could bring our previous thoughts to life and look further into them.

We then produced a mind map, considering aspects such as mise en scene, characters and the narrative to finalise the main concepts from our previous ideas.

Preliminary Task

180-Degree Rule
Characters in a scene should have the same left-right relationship to each other, with the filming only taking place within the 180-degree angle in which this is maintained.

Match on Action
Where one shot cuts to another, still portraying the action of the first shot.

Shot Reverse Shot

Character is supposedly looking at a point of view or over the shoulder shot, which is followed by a reverse angle shot of the character themselves looking at it, or of the other character looking back at them.

Learning Comment:

From completing the preliminary task I have learned how to film a range of shot such as close up shot, wide shot, over the shoulder shot, medium shot, extreme close up and long shot. Filming a range of shots has allowed me to become more comfortable with filming with a vast range of techniques and camera angles.

Learning Comment:
From analyzing the representation of opening sequences, I have learnt how to identify with my social group using various aspects of mise en scene, camera angles and editing.I will need to use costume, hair, make up and props to represent the characters and make the audience identify with them as well as using camera angles, sound and editing to coincide with the genre of the film.

Narrative Structure

Back to The Future
The first shot we see in the opening sequence is a room full of clocks, suggesting the resident is an unusual character, and the homemade mechanism shown later on shows us that the character is inventive and scientific. The narrative is hinted to us through the television news announcement of stolen plutonium and seeing a box of it in the room.

Tadorov
Equilibrium – The first scenes show an ordinary boy going to school in usual routine and we are given a brief introduction into the majority of the main characters
Distribution – The distribution in the film is the Doc who invents a time machine and the main characters go to the past
Realisation -  The main character changes his history and sees the damage and they realise they are not able to travel back in time to where they need to go
Restored Order – They fix the time machine and travel back to the future and improve his family’s relationship.
