Manhattan
Aspects of the narrative are being revealed through the non-diegetic, third person voiceover. The narration of the man’s life suggests that his hopeful optimism about New York was inaccurate through his speech and tone. This gives the audience to have an insight to what is to come.
The movie title is
revealed through the Manhattan street lighting at the beginning sequence.
No credits are shown
during this sequence, the only text incorporated is text from the streets of Manhattan,
for example: road signs, shop names and companies.
The opening sequence
remains in the greyscale colour scheme, although colour was an available option
in the time it was filmed while showing a wide variety of shots of the streets
of Manhattan.
The majority of the
shots correspond with the voiceover in terms of the atmosphere and topics the
narrator covers.
The traditional jazz
soundtrack sets the scene of classic Manhattan.
The voice over
describes a man’s journey of moving to New York.
Through various attempts of
different tones and approaches the narrator attempts to describe the beginning
of the narrative.
The shots show a
typical and tradition side of New York, which is what the main character would’ve
expected.
The opening sequence
engages the audience as they are waiting to see what caused the narration to
become so pessimistic and negative.
