History of Coming of Age Films

Learning Comment:

Through creating my timeline I have learnt how coming of age films have changed over time. During the beginning period films often followed a cliché main character though an adventure, however in the 1980s movies were starting to be made to break or mimic stereotypes, as this was a relatable subject to teenage viewers, the target audience of coming of age films. The first films to do this were 'The Karate Kid' and 'The Breakfast Club'. Overtime I also noticed that the narrative changed from basing the film around a male main character to a female, one of the first examples of this was ‘Mean Girls’ produced in 2004.
